Should I cover my unit in the fall and winter?

To get to the answer that suits your unique requirements, you’ll need to weigh up the pros and cons of covering your HVAC unit as the colder weather closes in.

On one hand, covering your unit will keep debris such as leaves, dirt, and dust from clogging your equipment or infiltrating your home. It will also protect the condenser coils by keeping moisture from freezing over them.

On the other hand, most units are constructed to withstand the colder weather. This means that if you cover the unit, you could trap moisture between it and the covering, which can cause rust and corrosion. Trapped moisture can also damage the electrics inside of your HVAC unit. Additionally, if your exterior HVAC system supplies heat in winter with a heat pump or heat element, do not cover it.

The answer lies in the HVAC unit you select and the weather it’ll be facing, so chat to your manufacturer about what’s best for your particular product.
